“There was a large mushroom growing near her, about the same height as herself; and when she had looked under it, and on both sides of it, and behind it, it occurred to her that she might as well look and see what was on the top of it”

-Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Hi there and welcome!

My name is Liora Yuklea, and I am an MFA student at the Design for Social Innovation program at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

In my first semester in the program, I combined an art project we were doing about food system issues with a Biomaterials workshop I was taking at SVA’s Nature and Technologies Lab, to experiment with growing mycelium structures for my art piece. The end result was a piece called A Fine Line, displayed at the Putting it All on the Table exhibit in January 2014 at the SVA Gramercy Gallery.

This site details the process behind the making of the piece. I hope you find it as educational as I found growing organic, compostable art to be.

Big big thanks for all the help to:

Oliver Medvedik, Genspace

Suzanne, Tarah and all the crew at SVA Fine Arts Nature and Technologies Lab

Kevin O’Callaghan, Joe, Adria and Kaori at the 3D Design workshop

Stephen and Dana at Ecovative (and all of Ecovative, really)

Cheryl Heller and all the DSI family

Phil Ross

6th floor of 33 Flatbush Ave. for letting me dry mycelium in their kitchen oven
